Understanding alternate dimensions

Everyday we are living in multiple dimensions, although it’s not something we regularly think about it’s important to know and understand how different dimensions work in order to seek the unseen dimensional world and discover the possibility of parallel universes. To break it down, alternate dimensions are simply the different facets of what we perceive to be reality. We are immediately aware of the three dimensions that surround us on a daily basis – those that define the length, width, and depth of all objects in our universes.

However, many scientists believe that alternate dimensions exist beyond what we can see within the world we live in. According to the information provided on phys.org the universe actually exists in ten different dimensions thanks to the framework of Superstring Theory. As for today, we will be diving into a few of these fascinating dimensions!

First Dimension

The x-axis is what’s known as the first dimension, this is a line connecting any two points. It’s what gives dimensions length and has no width or depth, a perfect example of this is a straight line.

Second Dimension

This dimension is known as the y-axis or width, when you add the first dimension to width, it becomes two-dimensional, such as a triangle or circular object.

Third Dimension

This dimension is what brings things to life, this involves depth, when you take length, width and add depth it becomes three-dimensional, a good description of this an ice cube. All of these first three dimensions are clearly visible to the human eye, dimensions beyond this become less clear and more magical.

Fourth Dimension

Once you pass the third dimension, it’s no longer immediately apparent to the human eye. This is defined as a dimension in addition to length, breadth, and depth. Many people think of time as the fourth dimension, and sci-fi lovers may recognize that union as space-time, and indeed, the idea of a space-time continuum has been popularized by science fiction writers for centuries. Einstein described gravity as a bend in space-time. Today, some physicists describe the fourth dimension as any space that's perpendicular to a cube -- the problem being that most of us can't visualize something that is perpendicular to a cube. However, scientists believe this fourth dimension governs properties of all known matter.

Fifth Dimension

This dimension is completely unseen to us, it is a micro-dimension, where the possibility of alternate worlds begin. Physicists discovered this additional dimension when they were trying to make sense of connecting all fundamental forces known in  the universe. It’s been said that if we could see through to the fifth dimension, we would see a world slightly different from our own that would give us a means of measuring the similarity and differences between our world and other possible ones.

In conclusion, this really begs the question -- can a parallel universe(s) actually exist? It seems there is a great amount of potential, scientific research and hope in regards to this theory, where a parallel universe could very well exist, with alternate realities similar to ours. Although we can only see the first three dimensions around us, that being the x, y and z axis, we are slowly learning more about these additional dimensions and the possibility of things existing within them versus what our idea of reality is. The universe is practically infinite, it may almost be almost foolish to think we are the only living beings who play a part in it!
